How senior candidates should approach compensation talks with German employers

Base salary is only one line. Bonus structure, company car policies, and notice periods shape the real picture — and timing matters.

German offer conversations often begin later than candidates from other markets expect. Raising numbers too early can signal misalignment; waiting until a verbal intent is clear usually works better.

Ask for the full package in writing before you respond: base, target bonus, long-term incentives if any, pension contributions, car or mobility allowance, and holiday. For senior roles, notice periods of three to six months are common — factor them into start-date planning rather than treating them as a surprise.

When you counter, anchor on scope and market context for the function, not on personal need. A mild, precise ask with a rationale tied to responsibility lands better than a wide opening number. If equity is limited — as it often is outside listed groups — clarify cash bonus mechanics instead of chasing structures the employer cannot deliver.

We recommend rehearsing the conversation once with someone who will push back. Soft answers under pressure tend to leave money and clarity on the table.
